Tennessee Insurance Continuing Education (CE) Courses for License Renewal

Your Tennessee producer license expires every other year on the last day of your birth month, and you must complete your CE before you renew. If your birthday is October 15, your license expires on October 31 of your renewal year.

We report your completed hours electronically to State Based Systems (SBS), the platform Tennessee uses for CE transcripts. Tennessee rules give providers up to 30 days to report, but we submit your credits within 1 to 2 business days of course completion. You also receive a certificate of completion for your records as soon as you pass each course. NIPR will not accept your renewal until the state shows you as CE compliant, and that status can take up to 72 hours to update after your final hours post, so allow extra time.

No. Tennessee's 24-hour requirement applies to every line of authority, and any TDCI-approved course counts toward your general hours. Choosing topics that match your book of business is smart, but it is not required.

Yes, up to a point. Tennessee lets you carry a maximum of 12 general CE credit hours earned beyond the 24 required into your next renewal cycle. Ethics hours do not carry over, so you will still need 3 fresh ethics hours every cycle.

Tennessee will not renew a producer license until you meet the CE requirement, so an incomplete transcript by your deadline means your license lapses. State law lets you reinstate a lapsed license within 12 months of the renewal due date without retaking the exam once you complete your CE, but the penalty is double the unpaid renewal fee. You cannot legally sell, solicit, or negotiate insurance while lapsed, and carriers may terminate your appointments. After 12 months, you must reapply as a new applicant.
